Tapu Koko’s Shiny variant has finally made its debut in Pokémon GO, and obtaining it may be easier than expected. Here’s how players can grab it.
Pokémon GO added Shiny Tapu Koko into the game for the first time this January. The Electric- and Fairy-type Legendary Pokémon from the Alola region was already available in the popular mobile title, but its Shiny variant has only just arrived. Asides from the sparkles it showcases when an encounter begins, a Shiny Tapu Koko is also noticeable for its salmon-colored plume and its sizeable black shell mask, as opposed to the traditional yellow one. The embrace of black for their shells is also the case with all of the Shiny variants in the Guardian Deities Legendary group.
Tapu Koko is but one of the many different Raids in Pokémon GO during January, so players have also had a chance at getting other Shiny Legendaries in Raid reruns. Although a copy of a Legendary creature is guaranteed at the end of every Legendary Raid, the odds of it being a Shiny are fairly low. As such, finding a Shiny Tapu Koko in Pokémon GO may require players to participate in multiple Raids.
How To Catch A Shiny Tapu Koko In Pokémon GO
The only two ways of getting a Shiny Tapu Koko are through Legendary Raids and trading. Considering the very high amount of Stardust necessary for a trade like this, the most effective method is through Raids. In addition, Pokémon GO Raids have the best Shiny odds in the game – the standard odds of finding a Shiny Pokémon in the wild are around 1 in 500. This means there is a 0.2% chance of stumbling on a Shiny, according to Bulbapedia. However, for Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, this rate drops significantly to a generous 5% (1 in 20).
Players trying to catch a Shiny Tapu Koko will have a 5% chance of rolling one at the end of every Legendary Raid. It is important to point out that players will not necessarily find a Shiny on their 20th attempt as they may find it relatively early, on their first try, or disappointingly later, on their 30th try, for instance. To make sure the Raids are cleared out swiftly, players should make sure they are using the best Tapu Koko counters in Pokémon GO.
Because it is a Legendary Raid, it is important to ensure the activity is not handled alone. As pointed out by Jogada Excelente, the suggestion is that there are at least four players above level 30, three or more Trainers above level 40, or three raiders at level 50. Due to its typing, Tapu Koko is weak against both Ground-type and Poison-type moves. Players who eventually encounter a Shiny Tapu Koko should know that its capture rate is 100%, meaning any single Premier Ball that adequately hits it will result in its capture. In case players are afraid of missing too many Premier Balls, they should use a Nanab Berry to make it stop attacking.
Tapu Koko’s Legendary Raid in Pokémon GO run is limited until February 1, at 10 AM local time. As such, players have until that date and time to capture a Shiny Tapu Koko. If they miss the opportunity, they will have to wait for the Pokémon to return to Raids in the future or convince another person to trade. Fortunately, other events planned for Pokémon GO in February should keep the unlucky Trainers occupied, such as the Noibat Community Day, which will increase the Sound Wave Pokémon’s Shiny rates.
