Logan Director Teases Jump To DCU With Swamp Thing Post

Logan director James Mangold teases his jump to the DC Universe with a Swamp Thing post on social media hours after a new movie was announced.

Logan director James Mangold teases his jump to the DC Universe with a Swamp Thing post on social media hours after the new movie announcement. After hiring James Gunn and Peter Safran to be co-CEOs of DC Studios in late 2022, the last day of January 2023 is where the beginning of their plans was unveiled. The duo confirmed ten upcoming DCU movies and TV shows that are in development. This included the announcement for a new Swamp Thing movie. Very little was revealed about the status of the film or who would be in charge of making the monster-led superhero movie.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the hours that followed the massive DCU movie announcements, Logan director James Mangold teased his interest (or potential involvement) in the newly announced Swamp Thing movie by sharing an image of the comic character on Twitter.

The social media post by Mangold comes as he is currently finishing up Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but he could be looking for his next directing gig. It was previously reported that James Mangold had early interest in working with James Gunn at DC Studios. Now, the implication is that Swamp Thing is the movie he wants to make, and he might even already be in talks in secret. The Swamp Thing image shared by Mangold is from Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson’s Absolute Swamp Thing comic run.

How Swamp Thing Connects To James Gunn’s DCU Phase 1 Plan

James Gunn and the DC Comics version of Alec Holland/Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing is one of five DCU Phase 1 movies confirmed to be in development. It is part of the first chapter of the universe’s larger story, which is known as Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Swamp Thing fits directly into the monsters category of the overall DCU plan. The character of Swamp Thing is directly connected to the more supernatural corner of DC’s world. Whereas Superman: Legacy and The Brave and the Bold will help re-introduce Superman and Batman to the DCU, Swamp Thing appears to be an introduction to the monsters that exist within the shared universe.

There are currently no confirmed examples of how Swamp Thing connects to the overall DCU Phase 1 plan, but the comics provide a loose idea. Bringing Swamp Thing into the DCU in such a prominent way opens the door for the franchise to begin setting up the Justice League Dark team, which could include John Constantine, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, Zatanna, and more. Since Swamp Thing has been described as a dark origin story for Alec Holland, any Justice League Dark connections could be minimal but important for the franchise’s future.

When Will The DCU’s Swamp Thing Movie Be Released?

The DCU Phase 1 movie announcement did not reveal when Swamp Thing releases. However, it was confirmed that DC Studios is aiming to release two DCU movies in theaters per year. Superman: Legacy is confirmed for a July 2025 release date, which means that Swamp Thing will compete with the other four DCU movies in development to be the second release of 2025. That would be a quick turnaround for Swamp Thing, especially if James Mangold is directing, so a late 2026 release date might be more realistic.
