Riddick 4: Furya – Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Development of Riddick 4: Furya has slowly been picking up steam over the years, but 2023 brought the most important new Riddick movie updates so far — that devlopment is underway. It was first announced in 2014 that Universal Pictures wished to move forward with a fourth installment of the Riddick franchise. In 2015, Vin Diesel announced Riddick 4 would be titled Furya and confirmed it was an R-rated film (via MovieWeb). However, the movie stalled in pre-production, and Vin Diesel focused on other projects. That was until March 2023, when it was confirmed by David Twohy that both his and Vin Diesel’s focus is firmly fixed on the Furyan once more.

The first three movies in the Riddick franchise, Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013), have accumulated a cult following. Riddick was introduced as a lethal criminal en route an off-world prison in Pitch Black. When the transport crashlands on a monster-infested planet, Riddick uses his unique abilities to survive until daylight. In The Chronicles of Riddick, Vin Diesel’s character was given a grand narrative within which to take part, and his new position as the High Marshall of the Necromongers was explored further still in Riddick. Precise plot details are unclear, but it’s certain the Furyan’s story will continue to expand in scale and scope when Riddick 4: Furya arrives.

Riddick uses his enhanced eyes in Pitch Black

A significant Riddick 4 update arrived in February 2023 when the next installment, titled Riddick 4: Furya, was confirmed to be in active development, filming was due to start, and Vin Diesel was (of course) returning. Riddick 4 will be helmed by Pitch Black director David Twohy. Twohy and Diesel worked as director-actor on all three of the theatrical movies in the franchise, and the announcement 10 years after Riddick hit theaters that Twohy would once again write and direct the next Riddick movie was welcomed. The director is well aware of just how important Riddick is to franchise fans, and has gone out of his way to assure them Riddick 4 is being made with them in mind:

“Our legion of fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call-to-action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.” (via Deadline)

David Twohy, who wrote as well as directed all three Riddick movies, revealed that the years fans have waited patiently for Riddick 4: Furya updates are paying off, and that production was getting underway. Vin Diesel has teased Riddick 4 often throughout the years, but this latest announcement is the most solid so far. In the Deadline report, Twohy confirmed his return to write and direct the new Riddick movie, continuing his and Vin Diesel’s 20-year partnership. Twohy has revealed the new movie will take Riddick back to his homeworld, and that the Furyans are a lot more like Riddick than Vin Diesel’s character expects. It looks like Riddick 4: Furya will start filming later in 2023, which could slate it for a 2024 or 2025 release at the earliest.

Riddick 4: Furya Cast

Chronicles of Riddick Game Sequel Vin Diesel

Furya is still in the pre-production stages, so no Riddick 4 updates have been made public concerning casting (beyond Vin Diesel of course). There are plenty of cast members who could return from Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, or Riddick. Many, such as Karl Urban, Katee Sakhoff, and Dave Bautista have all had incredibly strong careers since Riddick released in 2013. Including The Boys’ Billy Butcher, The Mandalorian’s Bo-Katan Kryze, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax the Destroyer alongside Vin Diesel makes for a much more powerful casting statement in 2023 than in the early 2010s. Of all the aspects of the new Riddick movie, the returning cast could be a factor that thrusts the franchise into the mainstream.

Prior to David Twohy confirmed as such through the Deadline announcement, Vin Diesel had suggested through years of various Riddick 4 updates and teases that the next movie will delve into Riddick’s mysterious origins. The depth of storyingtelling has increased significantly in the Riddick movies since Pitch Black, and in the fourth, the Furyan fugitive will finally discover his homeworld — Furya. In The Chronicles of Riddick, Riddick’s homeworld Furya was described as a harsh world where only the strongest could survive. From Twohy’s description in 2023, where Riddick 4: Furya will take Riddick back to his birthplace, which he barely remembers. While he believes they are in danger from the Necromongers, when he arrives, he finds the Furyan’s fighting for their lives against a different enemy.

A storyboard slide Vin Diesel shared on Instagram showed Riddick in a spacesuit with a shocked expression on his face with a caption reading: “Scene 10 – The boy’s eyes shine just like Riddick’s.”. This was a strong hint the exploration of Riddick’s backstory might be done by introducing other characters like him on his homeworld. Judging by the storyboard, this could mean finally exploring Riddick’s infamous nigh-vision-granting eyeshine which kept him alive throughout the titular bioraptor-filled darkness in Pitch Black.

Specifics will no doubt come as production gets underway. Twohy and Vin Diesel haven’t been shy about divulging information thus far. Both understand the franchise they have created, and how important it is to the fans they owe its continued existence to. As a modestly-budgeted sci-fi horror released in the year 2000 without any notable stars to its name, Pitch Black could have easily become forgotten — a footnote in Vin Diesel’s filmography prior to movies like The Fast And The Furious. As it stands, Twohy and Diesel are able to make yet another Riddick movie 23 years later, and however Riddick 4: Furya continues the Furyan’s story, it’s confirmed it will be handled with the same care and attention to detail as the installments preceding it.
